Last year I was presented with one of my favorite challenges by DES Architects & Engineers: Photograph a large empty room with a floor to ceiling glass wall and make it look great. I chose to shoot the project at sunset to make the most of the glass wall and downplay the less than attractive street. This still left the large empty expanse of the interior, so we brought in people to fill the space. We needed them to be blurred and in motion else the composition would be very stilted and unrealistic.
The narrative we chose was a leasing agent showing the space to prospective tenants. given that it was an empty office there weren’t many way to include people interacting with each other and the environment is normal and meaningful ways.
I’m very pleased with the result. The positioning of the people and the lighting make the image one I proudly show whenever anyone asks if I have experience showing people in commercial spaces.
