Everyone loves a romantic twilight photograph of architecture because they are filled with drama and wonder. When I shot this image of the western span of the Bay Bridge my intent was to capture the elegance of the bridge, while ensuring there was enough context to anchor the bridge in it’s location. I wanted to photograph the bridge in relation to the city of San Francisco in a dramatic and memorable manner
My experience as an architectural photographer told me shooting from Yerba Buena Island at twilight, on a clear day, with a dramatic sunset in the background was the time to make best use of the bridges illumination. The sun was setting early enough that people would still be working so the buildings in the financial district would be well illuminated, thereby creating a well balanced representation of the bridge in context of the city of San Francisco.
