Today’s architectural photograph is the elevator lobby of the Batch Office building in Roseville, CA shot in 2004 for Williams + Paddon Architects + Planners.

I’ve shot more commercial architecture and interior design in my career than residential. The most valuable thing I’ve learned from shooting commercial spaces is to work with multiple and mixed sources of ambient or available light. In many situations such as this there is no opportunity to light the space, and through hard won experience I’ve learned that efforts to do so will be counter productive at best.

Having a degree of mastery working with available light us critical to the successful representation of the character and emotional context of a space or structure.
