Photographing luxury bedrooms is challenging because the beds are so big. This design had enough activity and life to keep the mass of the bed from overwhelming the image. A high camera angle also helped to minimize the visual weight of the bed. The low contrast lighting, bright windows and layers of color create so much visual motion that the bed never gets the chance to dominate the viewer’s attention.
I balanced the daylight filling the space to allow the bedside lamps to cast just enough glow to play their role as sources of illumination without creating too much warmth in the image. I was showing so much of this space I could only use one strobe light above and to camera left to open the shadows created by the direct sunlight streaming into the space.
