Titled - Who You?

I was assigned to create an image of the entrance to this Edwardian town home in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood.

The design elements of the painted wood paneling, non-skid strips, and glossy black door were very striking, but the liveliness of the framed art caused the composition to be unbalanced. The challenge was to add a contextually appropriate compositional element that would balance the energy of the artwork.

The home owner’s Italian greyhound was the perfect solution. He was the right size and color, and his placement in the doorway was natural and consistent with the normal behavior of a dog. I choose to photograph him in a surprised stance to add more energy to his presence.
