Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay
Redding, CA
Santiago Calatrava
Today’s architectural photograph is a collection of images I shot of the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay in Redding, CA designed by Santiago Calatrava. I shot these images as a personal project and to include in a gallery exhibit.

I heard Redding had invested in a spectacular bridge and when I had the opportunity I visited the sight. Redding is not known as a progressive city, nor have they distinguished themselves as a bastion for the arts and innovative architecture so I was stunned to find such an incredibly beautiful and elegant structure as an integral component of their tourism marketing.

There were many challenges in the construction of this bridge, the most important of which was to not disturb the Salmon spawning ground directly below the bridge, adversely impact the recreational fishing industry and create a public space that could be the source of pride for all the inhabitants. The designer, Santiago Calatrava rose to the challenge and overcame each one with a structure that embodies grace and advances the state of the art with such majesty, as he so often does.
