September 2010 Photograph of the Month Tafoni
This months photograph is titled “Tafoni”
I shot this image in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. Tafoni are small cave-like features caused by weathering and erosion found in granular rock such as sandstone or granite. They are found in intertidal areas, such as our coastline, as well as in deserts.
My wife Erica and I enjoy exploring the open spaces of the Peninsula, and when we found this remarkable feature of the landscape I knew I could get some really cool shots. And since my daughter suggested that I stretch my limits, I felt this was a good opportunity to set aside my innate preference for realism and explore the abstract.

August 2010 Photograph of the Month Twilight on the Sea of Souls
This months photograph is titled “Twilight on the Sea of Souls”
This image is another in a series I did of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse near Pescadero, CA back in 2006. I really love this particular lighthouse because of it’s archetypal architecture. It is the only classically styled lighthouse on the west coast because this is the only point that does not have cliffs of sufficient height on which to build the structure above the fog.
This is a pseudo high dynamic range image. Normally to shoot HDRI you need several different exposures of the same scene, however if you only have a single exposure you can still get unique and very dramatic results.
I hope you like it.
You can download this month’s screen saver by clicking the images above. A new window will open with a larger version that you can save to your hard drive.

July 2010 Photograph of the Month “Temple Hoyne Buell Theater”
This months Photograph of the month is titled “Temple Hoyne Buell Theater”
This image is the last photograph I shot as a semi-professional photographer way back in 1992. I had been working for five years to build the skills and acquire the experience necessary to open my business as an architectural photographer and finally all my plans were coming together. I had one more goal to achieve before I went out completely on my own and that was to photograph one large, dramatic public works project.
I pleaded my case to the theater manager and he decided to let me do my thing. He was very kind because not only did he let me into the theater on a Sunday morning he gave me free reign to make any changes to the lighting that I needed. It took me about a half hour to figure out the lighting controls and once I had mastered them I was all set. I shot five different images that day, using my 4×5 camera and black and white polaroids, this is the single best image.
In fact it’s so good I have used it as the closing image in my portfolio ever since. It’s still one of my favorites and always will be.
I hope you like it.

June 2010 Photograph of the Month “Red Clover”
This months photograph is titled “Red Clover”
I shot this image in the Sunol Regional Wilderness Area last year. I love the soft forms and gently colors of the flowers. Upon getting good close look I was surprised a the abundance of nectar produced by the flower, these little beads of nectar really give this image a level of interest that is absolutely delightful.
I always enjoy shooting nature photographs. It gives me the chance to get away from the computer, phone and e-mail, reconnect with my inner being and remember what I love about being a photographer, because in the day to day madness of proposals, appointments and accounting it’s far too easy to forget that I chose this career because I like taking pretty pictures.

May 2010 Photograph of the Month “Stasis″
This months photograph is titled “Stasis”
I have been planning this image for a few months now. I had shot some preliminary test images in February but wasn’t satisfied with the results.
There are some rather significant challenges involved with shooting high speed images of water drops. The technological challenges of timing are the least complex. I was not prepared for the amount of space that was required to shoot water drops and get the smooth gradient background I envisioned. I ended up buying a 40” x 60” print developing tray , painting it black and filling it with water – and it was just barely large enough to realize my vision.
This was one of the single most challenging images I have ever created. The image you see here is the result of four days of hard work, in a wet, dark room. I must have shot 400 images before everything finally fell into place with lighting, precise timing, angle of view, size of water drop, and the distance it traveled to get the perfect splash, the perfect reflex splash, and the perfect pressure waves. I even had to control the surface tension of the water using soap, alcohol and temperature of the water. I am very proud of the result.

Updates to Splash Page
Now that I’m no longer working with nesting Newbies I’m finally getting back on top of my duties and have updated the splash page of my website to include selected images I have created for my clients over the past few months. I think it looks great. If you have a chance please take a look and let me know what you think.
And once I deliver two more projects I can hopefully get back on top of the Photograph of the Month, but the client always comes first.

April 2010 Photograph of the Month “Restraint 2″
This months photograph of the month is titled “Restraint 2” I hope you like it.
I shot this image of the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay in 2007 in preparation for a gallery showing. I first saw this wonderful creation in 2004 on a trip to Redding, CA to photograph the Shasta County Municipal Building. It made a big impression upon me and I have revisited the site several times since then and each time I find a new view of the grandeur and majesty of this remarkable example of creativity and design; I never would have imagined to find such a work in Redding, but there it is.
Both March and April have been extremely hectic months. Beginning with shooting several last minute projects for the ASID Design competition, being voted onto the board of ASID CA Peninsula, previous commitments to the chapters student members and commitments to my favorite not-for-profit organization, along with some on-going and resource intensive technical challenges with my computer system I have barely managed to get Aprils photograph of the month out on the first day of May. But, as with all the things there is never a good time to do anything, so you do it when you have the chance.

Hope Hospice Hike for Hope
Recently I donated my photograph “Along the road to Avalon” to Hope Hospice for their “Hike for Hope” fund raising event. This was one of my first publicized HDR images and it has made a big hit.
Donna McMillion sent me this:
The Hike is going well, with 210 hikers signed up and it’s more than a month away. I anticipate about 350 to 400 by May 1.
You can learn more about the Hike for Hope event at their website

Photograph of the Month March 2010 “Ghost Fence”
This month’s photograph is titled “Ghost Fence” I hope you like it.
I found this fence in Sunnyvale Baylands Park last year while biking with my wife. I waited for the heavy fog to shoot it because the image I envisioned called for a mysterious atmosphere to convey the mood of the fence. I think it worked out quite well.
This photograph is a High Dynamic Range Image as are most photographs I have created over the past few years.
I recently discovered that my gallery software has been restricting the size of the images I posted there. It’s a very complicated piece of software and this feature got past me when I was setting it up.
I have corrected the problem and now the screen saver images will be the full 1920×1200 pixels in wide screen format and 1280×1024 pixels in square format that I intended them to be in the first place. I will be going through my archive and resizing past Photograph of the Month images to meet these specifications.
You can download the full size versions by clicking on the images you see above.

February 2010 Photograph of the Month “Puff Ball”
This month’s photograph is titled “Puff Ball.” I hope you like it.
I shot this image last year in a local park specifically for the February Photograph of the Month. I intended it to remind everyone of the warm, sunny days of summer hoping it would brighten your day and lift your spirits as the cold dark winter slowly passes.
This is a High Dynamic Range Photograph. I am very pleased with the way this technique brings out detail in both the brightest highlights and darkest shadows. It allows me to control the representation of my subjects with almost the same freedoms of a painter. I say “almost” because when I create an image I still have to work with what is actually before me; a painter has no such restriction.
All images in my “Photograph of the Month” series are sized and formatted as a screen saver or computer desktop wallpaper. Please, share it with your family and friends, with my compliments.
Please call me if you have any need for photographs and I will do all I can to help you.
